Music

At Stoke St Gregory Primary School, music is an essential and joyful part of school life. We believe that every child is a musician, and our curriculum is designed to nurture creativity, confidence and a lifelong love of music. Through high‑quality classroom teaching, whole‑class instrumental learning, daily singing and rich performance opportunities, children develop musical skills, knowledge and enjoyment from their earliest years.

Music in the Curriculum

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In the Early Years, music is woven throughout the curriculum. Children explore sound through singing, nursery rhymes, rhythm games, simple percussion instruments and opportunities for creative expression. Music supports early communication, physical development and storytelling, helping children build a strong foundation for future learning.

Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2)
In KS1, children develop their understanding of pulse, rhythm and pitch. They sing regularly, explore tuned and untuned percussion, and begin composing simple patterns. They listen to a wide range of music, developing their ability to respond, describe and enjoy different styles.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6)
In KS2, pupils deepen their musical understanding through singing, composing, performing and listening. Children learn to read simple notation, perform as a group, and explore a broader range of genres and traditions. They develop confidence as musicians and experience making music in increasingly sophisticated ways.

Whole-Class Ensemble Learning

A distinctive feature of our music curriculum is our whole-class instrumental programme for Kingfisher Class (Years 3 and 4).

  • One full year of ukulele tuition
  • One full year of drumming tuition

These sessions, delivered weekly, enable every child to learn an instrument, develop performance confidence and experience the joy of playing together in an ensemble.

Singing Throughout the School

Singing is a valued part of our school culture, taking place every single day.

  • In the Early Years, children learn through rhymes, songs and musical stories.
  • In KS2, singing supports learning across the curriculum, including times tables songs and topic-linked songs.
  • Singing forms an important part of ourcollective worship, helping children express ideas, build community and celebrate our school values.

Our school choir is very well attended and performs confidently at events across the Trust and in the wider community. The choir offers children additional challenge, enjoyment and the chance to take part in special musical opportunities throughout the year.

Performances and Community Events

Children have regular opportunities to showcase their musical learning. Performances include:

  • Church services throughout the year
  • Local community events
  • Class assemblies
  • Our end-of-year whole school production. In 2025, this was The Lion King, involving singing, ensemble performance and dramatic presentation.

We believe performance builds confidence, teamwork and pride in achievement.

Instrument Lessons

To support children who wish to develop their musicianship further, we offer individual or small-group tuition in:

  • Piano
  • Trumpet
  • Clarinet
  • Voice
  • Guitar

These lessons take place in school and are open to pupils across KS2.

School Band

Our School Band rehearses every Tuesday after school and brings together children who learn instruments to experience ensemble playing. The band performs at school events and helps to inspire younger pupils to take up an instrument.
