School Council
A School Council is a group of students who are elected to represent the views of all pupils and to improve their school. It gives children the opportunity to make their voices heard and feel part of the whole school community.
What does it do?
A School Council does a number of things which could include:
They meet regularly – usually with a teacher present to discuss items, sort out any problems or discuss fundraising events
Members of the School Council are responsible for carrying out the ideas that have been agreed for example planning fundraising events or writing articles for the school newsletter.
What Jobs are there?
Each year in September, every year group will nominate 1 representative to be a member of the School Council.
The School Council will then meet to elect officers such as:
- Chair
- Secretary
What makes a good School Council?
A good School Council is one that represents the views of all pupils and gets things done.
Many schools have councils, but they are not all successful. these are some things that make a council effective.
- Regular meetings
- A council that is not too big
- Councils that meet regularly
- Good communication between representatives and their class
- Training for School Council members
- Annual evaluations
